Tuesday 17, CLES event – Making places resilient Manchester
This course will explore the characteristics of place resilience based on CLES’ own research into resilient places and the CLES Resilience Model which provides a conceptual framework for assessment.
The course will guide delegates through the framework and look at ways it can be used to help rebalance our economies and prioritise resources in a time of austerity.
Delegates will
* Learn about the nature of resilient places
* Explore how current challenges and the Coalition government policy makes place resilience more important
* Learn about the CLES place resilience concept and how it was developed
* Understand how to apply the CLES place resilience concept in your own locality

Course fee
£200 plus VAT: £105 plus VAT for charity, voluntary sector organisations.
CLES members can use event days to book this course or receive a 20% discount on the above fees.
A 20% early bird discount is available on all courses booked before the end of February 2012.
Course fees include detailed reference materials, refreshments and buffet lunch.
9.30am registration and refreshments for 10am start. Course ends at 4pm.

Weds 18  12 to 1, From Arab Spring to Sustainable Consumption? A Historical Perspective South Theatre, Samuel Alexander Building, South Wing, University of Manchester

 This lecture will focus on two pivotal Middle Eastern countries—Egypt and Saudi Arabia—in detailing the spread of mass consumption in the Middle East during the oil boom era (c. 1974-1984). During this period, tremendous hikes in energy prices and, not less dramatic, migration of millions to work in oil-exporting countries revolutionized basic human needs and aspirations for shelter, food, and clothing. The period also experienced new selling venues and promotion of goods and services. Significantly, preoccupation with buying things closely corresponded with deepening religiosity as part of everyday life and as politics.

Saturday 28th April 11am-3pm Love Food Fest is a celebration of sustainable eating in Manchester. There will be free food and drinks and hands-on workshops on the themes of growing food, cooking cheap and healthy recipes and food composting. There will be tonnes of fun food games and best of all entry is completely free!
