The free seminar will be opened at 10 am by Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council and Chair of the GM Low Carbon Hub. Anne Selby and key note speaker Professor David Hill will provide an overview of the challenges facing the natural environment, including: Localism – low carbon, natural capital and climate resilience; Green Growth – driving economic benefit from climate change activity and valuing the natural environment and Ecosystems – the economic value of GM’s ecosystems and the services they provide. James Woudhuysen, Joanne Green, and Erik Bichard will help introduce a discussion on fracking and a second dash for gas
James WoudhuysenAlthough the UK government has been mindful of the looming energy crisis for the last decade, it has responded like rabbits caught in the headlights. Finally, there is some political will to start resolving the matter with more than a few solar panels or wind turbines on the roof. In the 2012 budget, George Osborne approved the construction of new gas-fired power stations, and established the Office for Unconventional Gas and Oil, to join up responsibilities across government and provide a single point of contact for investors and streamline the regulatory process for deploying technologies like fracking.

Community renewables and retrofit social for Greater Manchester, Thursday 5th September 2013 Man and Scythe, Bolton (the pub was closed but is now re-open!)

Fuelling Manchester is the networking meetup for people and groups involved in community renewables around Greater Manchester. This is purely a social event, there will be no agenda and no structure just an opportunity to meet with like-minded individuals to chat, discuss and network. Run by the Carbon Co-op in association with the Kindling Trust and Generating Success. This month part of Community Energy Fortnight.

Who: for anyone involved in community renewable projects, including: hydro co-operatives; bio-mass and woodland management enterprises; retrofit and energy efficiency projects and solar energy collectives. Thurs 5th, 6-8pm Meeting the climate challenge: Is a low carbon energy future possible? in Renold Building.

You are invited to a public debate on how we can meet the challenge of climate change – undoubtedly one of the major problems faced by our nation and the world.

There are complex technical, economic, social and political issues that bear on this and a panel of experts has been assembled from industry, local government and academia, whose knowledge covers all these aspects.

Representatives from The University of Manchester will include Professor Kevin Anderson, Director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change, and Dr David North, Director of the Centre of Sustainable Consumption.

Each panel member will give a short presentation and afterwards there will be a public question and answer session. Fracking, transport policy, the viability of carbon capture and storage and many other issues are up for discussion!

A reception will be held after the event in which discussion can continue to flow.

On the tour you’ll visit three householders around Greater Manchester who retrofitted their houses as well as getting the chance to meet other people on the tour interested in making improvements to their homes.

On Sunday 15th September, over 70 cities all across the World will see hundreds of cyclists simultaneously descend to raise awareness over the rapidly melting Arctic Sea Ice. All this will be done to coincide with Aurora – a double decker sized Polar Bear who will be marching around London on the same day to highlight the likes of Shell, who don’t see diminishing ice caps as a threat to the planet, rather as a business opportunity to access even more fossil fuels embedded under the Arctic. We’ll start the day at 12 noon outside the Hilton Hotel, and follow a trail of 10 other famous landmarks in the Manchester/Salford areas to capture photos of the bikers passing by.”
