September 2013

Inclusion in this calendar is NOT a guarantee of quality. If we think something is extremely likely to be worth your time, then we will put one or more little “thumbs up” icons next to it. We a) are maybe prejudiced about some groups b) have specific criteria about usefulness and c) could be wrong.

Events, dear boy, events.

Monday 30, 6:45pm start Fracking: a technological innovation too far?
James Woudhuysen, Joanne Green, and Erik Bichard will help introduce a discussion on fracking and a second dash for gas
James WoudhuysenAlthough the UK government has been mindful of the looming energy crisis for the last decade, it has responded like rabbits caught in the headlights. Finally, there is some political will to start resolving the matter with more than a few solar panels or wind turbines on the roof. In the 2012 budget, George Osborne approved the construction of new gas-fired power stations, and established the Office for Unconventional Gas and Oil, to join up responsibilities across government and provide a single point of contact for investors and streamline the regulatory process for deploying technologies like fracking.
In the discussion area of the International Anthony Burgess Foundation, Engine House, Chorlton Mill, Cambridge Street, Manchester, M1 5BY. Please arrive around 6:15pm for complimentary drink and nibbles, ready for a prompt 6:45pm start – expected to finish before 8:30pm. Tickets are Free, as the discussion is sponsored by the Manchester Network of the IET but need to be booked in advance, through the Eventbrite ticketing button above or by clicking on http://fracking-and-technology.eventbrite.co.uk.

This discussion, including audience comments, will be filmed and made available online as a reference resource.

low carbon energy

You are invited to a public debate on how we can meet the challenge of climate change – undoubtedly one of the major problems faced by our nation and the world.

There are complex technical, economic, social and political issues that bear on this and a panel of experts has been assembled from industry, local government and academia, whose knowledge covers all these aspects.

Representatives from The University of Manchester will include Professor Kevin Anderson, Director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change, and Dr David North, Director of the Centre of Sustainable Consumption.

Each panel member will give a short presentation and afterwards there will be a public question and answer session. Fracking, transport policy, the viability of carbon capture and storage and many other issues are up for discussion!

A reception will be held after the event in which discussion can continue to flow.

Saturday 14th September 2-5 – In Place of Growth Workshop Imagining Manchester where people thrive without harming the planet
What might life be like on a day to day level? What are appropriate aspirations for ourselves, our children and our city, if we want more equity and to live within ecological limits? We are aware that many Steady State Manchester supporters would value a more visual sense of what life might be like for residents in the city where we are living well within planetary limits. To what extent are our visions shared and different? This afternoon will be an opportunity for participants to flesh out a vision of what we are striving for.
It would be great if we know you are coming; e-mail steadystatemanchester@gmail.com to book and for venue details.

Hilton Hotel, Deansgate, Manchester, United Kingdom, M3 4LQ
“Come join Greenpeace on our Ice Ride! On Sunday 15th September, over 70 cities all across the World will see hundreds of cyclists simultaneously descend to raise awareness over the rapidly melting Arctic Sea Ice. All this will be done to coincide with Aurora – a double decker sized Polar Bear who will be marching around London on the same day to highlight the likes of Shell, who don’t see diminishing ice caps as a threat to the planet, rather as a business opportunity to access even more fossil fuels embedded under the Arctic. We’ll start the day at 12 noon outside the Hilton Hotel, and follow a trail of 10 other famous landmarks in the Manchester/Salford areas to capture photos of the bikers passing by.”
