Off-topic: Black journalism fund seeks donations.

There was a time when Manchester Climate Monthly was edited by a white guy and a BME woman. But then she (Arwa Aburawa) accepted a demotion to go and work for Al Jazeera…

On a serious note, journalism in this country is crushingly crushingly white. Red Pepper is trying to do something about this. They would like some of your money…

Did you know that 94% of British journalists are white?! As a media project supporting movements for social and economic justice we feel it’s an urgent priorityto support black and minority activist writers. We want to recruit a new section editor with first hand experience of the struggle for black liberation.

We’re aiming to raise £2.5K in 30 days, it would be much appreciated if you coulddonate – any amount small or large will make a difference. There are some perks to choose from too 🙂

In return for your contribution you could receive a magazine subscription or a lucky-dip radical book.

Funds raised will support journalism covering campaigns and creativity in areas such as:

•    the Black Lives Matter movement
•    black feminism
•    detention centres
•    borders
•    police state
•    cultural appropriation
•    afrofuturism
•    the impacts of climate change
•    the sharp edge of austerity

Find out more and donate via the indiegogo page.

THANK YOU!

It is remarkable that for all the column inches written about race that there is not a single print journalist with the specific responsibility of reporting and researching it. Funding one is not just a good idea in itself – it will raise the standards elsewhere” – Gary Younge
