    I understand your incredulity but, unfortunately, it can be incredibly dangerous for kids to walk to school in rural areas where there are winding lanes, no pavements – and everybody else is in a car. Either everybody walks or nobody does.

    But seriously, thanks for providing a useful corrective. Fit(sort of) urbanites like me can get a bit sneery about these things…
