Polar Bear Facepalm: 2% annual carbon emissions growth, year on year…

The text is from this article in the Grauniad.
Tyndall Centre are organising a “Radical Emissions Reduction Conference” at the Royal Society in December, btw. Should be a barrel of laughs. Me, I’ll be watching the cricket in Adelaide.

Envirolution asks “What is a ‘Low Carbon Community’?”

from Envirolution UK

At the Envirolution Festival 2013 we want to contribute to Manchester’s Climate Change Action Plan – Manchester A Certain Future.

One of the headline targets of M:ACF in 2009 when it was created was “to engage all individuals, neighbourhoods and organisations in Manchester in a process of cultural change that embeds ‘low carbon thinking’ into the lifestyles and operations of the city.”

We want to ask what does this actually mean? How are we to understand this so we can take it forward and develop meaningful targets that we can achieve together.

I invite you to being this conversation now so we can make the most of the opportunity Envirolution presents.

I have started discussions on Linkedin and ProjectDirt, plus will bring together comments from twitter and facebook.

So let’s start with, What is a ‘Low Carbon Community’?

Movement Building: How Do We Build A (Diverse) Movement?

Movement ICONIn a bid to answer the big questions facing the environmental movement in Manchester, MCFly has been mining the minds and experience of climate activists. In the last issues we looked at morale – getting it, keeping it and sharing it. This month’s topic is all about diversity. How do we get more people (especially ones who don’t look like us; white, middle-class, child-free) involved in the “climate movement”?

To do list:
+ Reach out to community groups but don’t except a huge response straight away. These things take time – a lot of time.
+ Build a personal and face-to-face relationship.
+ Attend community events where you’re not expected. Ask to be added on their mailing lists etc so you can keep on eye on these opportunities.
+ Be aware of the obstacles facing a community whether that be poverty, language barriers, internal conflict or just a lack of time.
+ Make specific demands and focus on the communities strengths when deciding on this.
+ Remember that these issues are really new to some people and so nothing is obvious.
+ Be flexible – about they way you meet, the place, the time, everything.

“I think people underestimate how hard it is to take that first step alone. In a lot of Muslim communities there usually isn’t someone who is involved in green campaigning that people can turn to to ask questions and also to encourage them to get involved.

The lack of that personal connection can also make it hard for people to have the knowledge and confidence to approach groups. I think if I didn’t go to university and get involved in activism which helped me link to other networks, I would never have become a campaigner. So I think that personal connections, especially long-term, are really important to encouarge more diversity.”

Lamees Hafeez, Muslim green campaigner from Burnage

Steering Group chair role – applications extended to Friday 10th May

The role of chair of the Steering Group is up for grabs. We applied (mildly tongue-in-cheek; we think we would do a damn fine job, we also know we have not a snowball’s chance in hell of getting the gig).  The deadline was last Friday, 12th April.  Lo and behold, rather than a “thank you for your application, on this occasion it has been unsuccessful” email, we got this –

“Several comments have been raised with the Steering Group regarding the short timescale for receipt of applications for the role and the fact that the advertisement was live over the Easter holiday period which meant that a number of potential applicants had already missed the deadline.  Therefore the deadline has been extended to midday on Friday 10 May 2013.”

We are informing all applicants of this extension along with an invitation to adapt or improve their applications and resubmit them if they so wish.

Please note the Group has been asked whether it would consider applications from people who wish to co-Chair the role; this is not something that had previously been considered but the Steering Group is certainly open to the  idea.

Only a cynic would suggest that they didn’t have enough palatable applications to be able to make a choice…
