#Manchester #climate nuggets Feb 11th 2013 #mcc #acertainfuture #acretinfuture

Hi all,

with a truly awe-inspiring efficiency the confirmation of invites for the Stakeholder “conference” (3.5 hours, including Leese, Liverpool and Leeds) have gone out.  People have been given… three weeks notice for the “event” which happens on the afternoon of March 4th.  #epicfail.

Sadly, we have been told we are banned from attending.  So it goes.  We’d like to quote the aphorism from Marx (Groucho Marx, that is), that “we wouldn’t be the member of any club that would have us as a member.”  Still and all, there’s a principle at stake here – who gets to be a stakeholder? Who decides that?  We, perhaps immodestly, think that we’ve done more work than some in trying to get Manchester moving on climate.  For instance, in a normal week we put up as much content (written by us and others), as the Steering Group – led as it is by a maestro of public relations – has managed in… two years. #epicfail.

Watch the next post for a few more questions on all this…

See you at the coalface.

Arwa Aburawa and Marc Hudson

Weds 13, 6pmDoes the UK have a credible Strategy for Energy: What is the Future of Nuclear Power?’ Professor Martin Freer

The UK faces a major challenge in reshaping its energy portfolio to meet climate change targets, replacing oil and coal and the existing nuclear power stations. Renewables will be part of the picture but are expensive and involve the simultaneous construction of back-up power systems.  The development of shale gas resources could place the UK in the top twenty nations in terms of reserves and might suggest that gas should be the solution but carbon capture and storage remains problematic. It would thus seem there is an important role for nuclear power (if acceptable to public opinion post-Fukushima) but the time-scales are very challenging.

Sci Comm-edy: Making Science Communication Funny

Friday 22nd February, 2013

11am-6pm
MadLab, Manchester

Are you looking to add a touch of humour to your repertoire of speaking skills?

This course gives you new tools and perspectives drawn from stand-up comedy. The day features practical, creative and inspiring exercises and activities alongside analysis of videos of stand-up comedians.

  • Get into your natural conversational tone, being in the moment with the audience so you come across as responsive, interactive and dynamic.
  • Discover how to give your content real life and impact – even when not going for laughs. The skills you will learn enliven, create interest, engagement and surprise, not just laughter.
  • Learn how to be more effectively funny when you want to be. How ‘misdirection’ is a simple and powerful tool for creating jokes and funny moments.
  • Learn how to deliver and time funny lines. And how to recover if it goes wrong.
  • Deal with heckling and all of the challenges that can be thrown at you in public speaking situations, from small intimate groups to the largest and most formal occasions.
  • Create a ‘thought process’ and achieve a feeling of spontaneity.
  • Take a fresh look at starting and ending your presentations. Discover how a seemingly informal opening can work wonders before you get into the traditional opening. And how an unexpected postscript can really punch home and make memorable the whole speech.

Razing trees and credibility: Alexandra Park protest, Sat 9th February #Manchester #mcc #insultation #consultation

Sat 9th February: Over a hundred people who live around Alexandra Park attended something between a protest and wake today.  Organised by the Save Alexandra Park Trees group, the peaceful gathering bore witness to the handiwork of the chainsaws sent by Manchester Town Hall after a “consultation” that many felt was a farce.

Local MP Gerald Kauffman gave a short interview to waiting cameras at the north-west entrance. Local councillors were conspicuously absent.  The group moved onto the Park.  After hearing a brief speech (see disclaimer) where the avenue of sycamores used to be, the group moved down to the lake for further explanations what will be done in the coming years.

Many people expressed outrage at the loss of trees and shrubbery. Others were particularly angry about the lack of meaningful consultation with residents by the City Council.

A facebook statement written on Friday by one person who attended the protest sums up feeling –

The devastation is still in progress. But we need to do something. 5 million pounds spent in a park that we’ve grown up with, that is so dear to us – we can’t allow this to be a bad thing. We have to turn this around. This must be a turning point in the history of our city. Consultation on the transformation of our public spaces should never look like this again. The city council is caretaker for our public spaces but they are ours. It is our park. It is our heritage. Its time for some humility and recognition that this is not the way to operate. Start the healing process now MCC. Listen, apologise and stop felling trees, you do not have a mandate.

The Save Alexandra Park Trees group is asking concerned residents to take a series of actions. Here are some of them:

Disclaimer: The organisers of the protest had invited Manchester Climate Monthly to give a speech. I took them up on the offer. You can, if you are totally devoid of toe nails to clip or X-factor re-runs to watch, read it here.

Disclaimer the second:  I really should have gotten more vox pops from folks. And made this into a proper news story. My bad.  Will try to do better in future.

The Year Ahead – Carbon Co-op

carboncoop_logoWhat were the big successes of 2012?
Starting to recruit members, carrying out 40 whole house retrofit property surveys and getting the opportunity to deliver a £400,000 Community Green Deal programme.

What were the big lessons learnt?
That the more environmentally aware of us routinely under-heat our homes to the detriment of our health and that government are well intentioned on making reductions in carbon emissions but overly reliant on market-based, corporate-led solutions – time for a bottom up approach!

Together Works 2010

What we can expect from the Carbon Coop your in 2013?
Manchester’s first programme delivering 80% CO2 reduction homes fit for 2050 living and exciting developments in the field of open source energy monitors.

How will you know that 2013 has been a success and the lessons of 2012 have been implemented?
When the open source energy monitors are showing 80% reductions in energy usage and, where applicable, improvements in air quality in at least 8 households in Greater Manchester. When the Carbon Co-op model is refined and able to be rolled out at scale in streets and communities around the North West.

“News” “flash”: MCFly editors not welcome at “Stakeholder” “Conference” – was it something we said? #Manchester #climate #farce

Have you signed up to attend the ever-shrinking Stakeholder “conference” (three and a half hours of dross?)  Have you found out if you’re allowed to attend?  We did, and … we’re not.  Maybe something to do with asking all those awkward questions (and rarely, if ever getting any answers)?  Nice to know that Steve Connor and his cronies are so keen to have open discussions about what’s going so very well, isn’t it?

This just landed in our personal inboxes

Dear Marc and Arwa

Regretfully we won’t be issuing you with an invitation to the March 4th conference but will make we sure pass on any notes or outcomes for you to publish on your blog.

Regards
Steve

Steve: you’ve found the time to send us a personal email, full of very sincere “regrets” and “regards.” How about keeping your promise that you made exactly a month ago to answer basic questions about who the sub-group chairs are – or aren’t. Or is it simply that you couldn’t find enough people to fill those roles?

… that were ignored.
