Open letter by Emma Greenwood to #Manchester politicians – “support the #YouthStrike4Climate”

Emma Greenwood is a 15 year-old student from Bury. Because the “adults” have so fundamentally failed on climate change, she – and people like her – are having to step up and take action on climate change.  She has written an open letter to councillors of Greater Manchester and to the Mayor Andy Burnham.  In it she asks them to throw their weight behind the next Youth Strike, which is on Friday 24th May. The full text is below.  It’s also available as a pdf and as an image (bottom of blog post).

Please send this letter to your councillors [find them here], your MP [find her/him here] and to Burnham [Twitter, email, facebook] as an email, tweet etc.  Write to them (snail mail!!). Visit them.  Please tell them to step up and act as if this is an emergency (because it bloody well is), and support the adults in the room – i.e. the children forced to go on strike.

Dear Councillors of Greater Manchester, and Andy Burnham (Mayor of Greater Manchester),

My name is Emma Greenwood. I am a 15-year-old student who lives in Bury. I am writing to you on behalf of all young people to ask for your support in the upcoming “Youth Strike 4 Climate Action” on Friday May 24th.

As you know, it will be the fourth youth strike held in Manchester, in which young people from across Greater Manchester will walk out of school to make a statement that the safety of our future needs to stop coming second place. We will stand united with over forty other counties in the U.K. and many other countries across the world to demand change.

To quote Greta Thunberg, who has inspired us and given us the courage to act. Why should we be studying for a future that soon may be no more, when no one is doing anything to save that future? And what is the point of learning facts when the most important facts clearly means nothing to our society?”

So, this is why we will be on strike; not because we don’t value our education, but because we value the safety of our future – and that of children yet unborn – even more. For years activists older than us and our age have been going to council meetings, starting petitions and running school eco clubs but very little has changed. We want governments across the world to start putting words into action and seeing climate change as the imminent threat it is. Greater Manchester can and must do much more. The declaration in parliament last week of a climate emergency needs to be backed up with action.

We know that you have to balance many competing needs, but right now the decisions you are making do not appropriately reflect the immediate and drastic action that tackling climate change requires – the Mayor of Greater Manchester admitted as much at last month’s Green Summit.

We acknowledge that schools have a legal obligation around safeguarding of minors. We know that absences from school of “exceptional circumstances” is serious and can draw various punishments. We also know that these are exceptional circumstances, and the dangers we are faced with matter more. We ask you to stand with us, to understand that at this moment you have an opportunity to help support us in doing what is right, not to punish us.   We would remind you that many actions taken by those fighting for Women’s Suffrage, one hundred years ago, were condemned as illegal by the politicians of the day. We now, of course, celebrate those who fought for the vote.

For these reasons, we ask that you allow students from the areas you represent to attend the strike, and help us in demanding the safety of our future. We simply want you to allow us to fight for the safety of our future, free of the dangers of punishment because of our fears.

If you wish to discuss this issue further I would love to hear your opinions and/ or oppositions to the involvement in the strikes. I am free to be contacted by email any time on emmagreenwood03@gmail.com

Sincerely,

Emma Greenwood

Youth Striker and Bury’s Youth MP

Tina Louise Rothery at May Day event #Manchester #fracking #climate

Here’s a video of Tina Louise Rothery speaking at yesterday’s May Day event, organised by the Manchester Trades Council. Early on she talks brilliantly about what a climate emergency declaration would actually mean at the local authority level.

Before you watch it – this. If you live, work or study within the boundaries of Manchester City Council, please sign (and then share) the climate emergency petition online or on paper (you can sign it at the Sandbar, 120 Grosvenor St, and you can get more information at climateemergencymanchester.net.

Fridays for Future April 26 in #Manchester – very good report by student journalist

Kelly Nguyen, who is an international digital journalism student at Salford University, has produced a written report and short video about the Fridays for Future gathering at the Central Library on Friday April 26.

You can read it- The world is dying’: youngsters strive for green future, and watch the short video, with interview footage with Lillia Adetoro, Jennie Gibson and ,er,  me.

Ms Nguyen also restored my faith in student journalists from Salford by actually sharing – as per agreement – her footage without having to be chased up repeatedly. Fwiw, the full interview is here, if you want throw five minutes of your life away.

Comments and critiques (they don’t have to be friendly) welcome.

Guest post by Extinction Rebellion activist about her time in London

The following is by Pia, who lives in South Manchester.

I went down with my mum and her friend.

xr person1.JPGI wasn’t sure what to expect because I hadn’t been to anything related to Extinction Rebellion before, but my mum and her friend had.

It was truly eye opening for me I didn’t realise I knew so little about what is yet to come and what is already happening due to climate change!

xr person2

I was in Parliament Square and they had a stage set up with speakers coming from every where to talk about this serious matter. We heard an amazing poet and and environmental scientists speak. There was also activities for families so it felt like everyone and anyone could be included.

Later on I volunteered; helping giving out flyers and making sure people knew the terms that’s where made by Extinction Rebellion to keep the peace.

I had a really good time there and felt like I was part of something amazing!

Interview with Youth #Climate Striker Harriet Potts #YouthStrike4Climate

Every Friday, Manchester Climate Monthly is going to publish an interview with a Youth Climate Striker from (Greater) Manchester, to coincide with the Fridays for Future gathering outside the rear steps of the Town Hall (or at the Central Library if it’s raining, which occasionally does happen in Manchester)

Date for your diary – Friday 24 May for the next Climate Strike. St Peter’s Square, 12 noon.

Now on with the interview, with Harriet Potts.

Was the last strike bigger than you thought it would be ? What was your favourite thing about it?

The event was insane, I was so proud of everyone that turned up to shout and make some noise about one of the biggest issues impacting us right now. The strike was the biggest one I had been to yet and I hope they only get bigger. My favourite bit of the event was probably the sense of community, everyone joined together for this amazing cause and as of today (May 1st 2019), the government are listening and have declared a climate emergency. Knowing that as a young person I can make this change and that there are other young people who feel as passionately about this issue as I do is amazing.

When did you first start learning about climate change – was it in school, from your parents? Did Greta Thunberg have a part to play?
Greta Thunberg is one of the most inspiring people on the planet, she has single handedly started a revolution and I am in complete awe of her… But she’s not where my interest in the climate stemmed from. Sir David Attenborough made me fall in love with our planet with his documentaries and because of him, I decided I wanted to learn how to save it.

What next after the last strike?
More and more and more strikes. The impact this strike had shows that we can make a change. I have also recently been elected as an environmental representative for a project [more details of this soon]  and I am so excited to see where this leads, our planet should be our priority and I am determined to share this message far and wide.

This is the tricky one – what sort of help/advice/support would you like from your parents, existing activists, adults? How is that best offered (I call it the POG problem – “Piss Off Grandpa/Grandma”)
I love the the name you’ve given to it… I’d say the biggest thing I’d like is for all young people to be listened too and taken seriously. Our futures are at stake and we have some pretty incredible people who know how to help fix it. Also… Please, please, please do your bit for the environment. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle!
